The Quilters
Constance and Charles Phillips (Connie and Charlie) have been around fabric for decades. Connie started sewing in 1960's making garments. While she enjoyed sewing she didn't enjoy making clothing. One day she was so frustrated by garment construction she gave sewing up entirely. In 1993, Connie was in a fabric shop and someone brought in a contemporary quilt and Connie got excited. Connie says, "I knew as soon as I saw it that quilts were what I really wanted to sew. I got books and magazines and taught myself to quilt."
Connie enjoyed making quilts for herself and her family. She often had quilt tops that needed finishing. However, quilt tops were not her only concern, her husband was nearing retirement. Connie had heard from other women that the moment their husbands retired they didn't know what to do with themselves. Charlie retired and as Connie predicted, he became, "bored and would come talk to me every 20-30 minutes."
One day Connie and Charlie were at a quilt show and saw a computerized quilting machine. Connie suggested that Charlie go learn more about the computerized quilting. Connie says, "I really wanted him to become interested in the quilting business, as well as give him something meaningful to do."
Luckily Charlie took to the computerized quilting machine like a needle to thread. The visual aspect of Charlie's previous career as a welder lent itself to the design and execution of computerized quilting. Soon after that show the Quilting Den bought its first quilting machine. Connie and Charlie spent a year practicing on Connie's quilts before going into business working on customer quilts. Four years later they can now handle a volume of ten quilts a day. They are able to turn quilts around in two to three weeks. They own two Gammill Statler Stitcher's and are ready to help you make your quilt a masterpiece.
When asked if there are any professional quilters the Phillips admire, Connie says Eleanore Burns is a favorite because of her directness and humor. "I thought I would laugh myself silly, when at a Eleanore Burns seminar at Paducah." Says Connie. You too will be filled with joy when you see how your quilts are finished with style at the Quilting Den.
